AstraZeneca’s decision to invest £300m in the UK — with Macclesfield at the heart of it — is a strong vote of confidence in Cheshire and Warrington’s world-class life sciences sector.

This investment of £100m helps safeguard and create high-quality jobs, while reinforcing our region’s role as a nationally significant hub for advanced manufacturing, research and innovation.

It also shows what’s possible when the right conditions are in place for business to grow. The Combined Authority will build on this momentum, to ensure places like Macclesfield and the wider region continue to attract global investment.

We’re ready to work with partners to make sure this delivers lasting benefits for our communities and strengthens the UK’s position as a leader in life sciences.

Cllr Louise Gittins, Chair of the Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority, welcomed the news. She said:

“AstraZeneca’s decision to invest £300 million in the UK, including £100m at its site in Macclesfield, shows Cheshire and Warrington is a world-leader in life sciences and capable of attracting global investment.

“Today’s announcement is a vote of confidence in our region — creating and sustaining highly-skilled jobs, and strengthens our reputation as a national leader in advanced manufacturing and research.

“The new Combined Authority’s mission is to unlock growth across the region, and we stand ready to build our strengths to create more opportunity and attract investment for local people, places and businesses.”
